How to Get ISBNs for Canadian Self-Publishers

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

If you plan to self-publish, be it in print, print on demand or as an ebook, you will need a unique International Standard Book Number (ISBN) assigned to your publication. This is the industry standard coding used by the publishing industry (booksellers, libraries, suppliers).

Fortunately, getting a 13 digit ISBN for your self-published book in Canada is a snap. And it’s FREE!

All you have to do is sign up with Collections Canada and you’ll receive a block of ISBN numbers. Small pubs get 10 to start with ( I’m using mine for ebooks). Then you just log in, assign one of your ISBNs to your publication and start using it.

So just head to collectionscanada or call toll-free at 1-866-578-7777 or email isbn@lac-bac.gc.ca.

Couldn’t be simpler.
